The fast pace of life and summer trips also increase the demand for ready-to-eat food. “Mantinga”, the largest producer of bread, snacks and frozen products in the Baltic States, exceeded the production record in July of this year, having produced more than 2 million sandwiches in a month – almost one sandwich for every resident of the country.

According to “Mantinga” executive director Vytenis Kupstas, who is responsible for production, the production volume of sandwiches usually increases by about 15 %er cent every year, and in the summer period they jump by almost a quarter.

“Fresh chilled and frozen sandwiches are one of the most popular products all year round. We currently produce as many as 75 different types of them. The first record was achieved last July, and this year in the same period we produced even more – as many as 2.14 million sandwiches”, comments V. Kupstas.

According to “Mantinga” data, the most popular in Lithuania is “Žalgiris sandwich” with chicken kebab meat, pickles and cheese. 

“We notice that the people of Lithuania like sandwiches with meat the most, but snacks with new flavors are rapidly becoming popular – for example, vegetarian sandwiches with mozzarella and tomatoes, sandwiches with polar bread or whole grain bread, quesadillas with various fillings and seasonings,” says the interviewer.

The popularity of sandwiches is determined not only by the fast pace of life, when people want to have a quick bite without wasting time, choosing a fresh and nutritious snack, but also by summer trips.

“Sandwiches are eaten both when stopping at gas stations on the way, and when relaxing in nature. This is how a new verb “sumuštiniauti” (“to eat sandwiches”) appeared in our language,” says V. Kupstas.

Currently, the range of fresh sandwiches produced by “Mantinga” includes frozen sandwiches, chilled triangular sandwiches, submarines and other sandwiches. Most of the sandwiches – about 70 % – are sold in Lithuania, 30 % are exported to other countries.
